According to the New York Times, this year's French Open marks "the first time in the Open era, which began in 1968, that all the American men entered in a major tournament lost in the first round."

Meilen Tu, who's still in the women's singles draw, said of the men's debacle:

I don’t know if it’s because they are not willing to grind for the points. I don’t know if they’re trying to finish the points too quickly. You’ve got to be ready to hit one more ball.

You know the men have problems when Meilen Tu is giving them pointers.

In case there was any doubt, Ginepri assured the world that the Americans would return to the French Open next year. But he suggested that they hold a clay-court camp beforehand, coached by a clay-court player.

David- Meilen Tu may have hit the nail on the head. Be willing to hit one more ball.

let's be honest here, a clay court camp is like a band-aid on a gash wound. it's probably better if the usta buys every US player a slide board and they practice throughout the year. to have the mental ability to hit another ball back is useless unless you know how to move on the dirt. it's easier for women because the players don't use as many funky angles.
